Art has evolved from sophistication to simplicity and ultimately deconstruction. Somewhere in between, dumbness has arose, creating new means of expression for the ones who cant do better. Sunburn art is the latest trend in social media, making people compete over intricate levels of stupidity. Our modern times have made people use stencils or strategically applied sunblock to create a DIY temporary sunburn tattoo on their bodies. Really now, when did watercolor become overrated? When did tattoo ink lost its charm? The human path of self-destruction has reached a worrying level of mindlessness. Officials from Skin Cancer Foundation have issued an official position to sunburn art, releasing a warning over the important health risks associated with tanned or sunburned skin. Getting sunburned increases risk of melanoma and people should keep in mind that sunscreen must be applied thoroughly and regularly especially when they expose themselves to the sun for extended periods of time. Aggressing our bodies with five or more sunburns in our youth increases lifetime melanoma risk by no less than 80%. Normally, an individuals risk to develop melanoma doubles provided one suffered from more than five sunburns. But hey, nothing compares to a batman icon printed onto red hot skin, decently fried by the steaming hot summer sun. Art needs sacrifice and if we have to expose ourselves to cancer in order to become contemporary artists, the price may be worth the effort. Or not, because actually, sunburn art is so wrong. This is where social media plays a very dramatic role, as the so called freedom of expression takes the human potential to its lowest degrees of exposure. Sunburn art preceded by a hashtag to enhance its level of importance is the living example of mindlessness. Decent people of the world, art needs sacrifice indeed, but its not about physical sacrifice which takes us to the peaks of creation, it is an effort of the mind which makes us overcome the limits of human perception. Sunburn art is not cool at all. Sunburn causes DNA damage to the skin, accelerates skin aging and increases lifetime skin cancer risks, experts note. The ultraviolet rays of sunshine damage DNA inside skin cells and make them more sensitive in front of cancer development, as the American Cancer Society states.
